COUNSELLING AND psychotherapy in Milton Keynes

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Metaphor Therapy.

I’m Carolyn. I became a counsellor after having my own experience of person-centred counselling in my twenties, which I found life changing. I gained my Level 4 diploma in Therapeutic Counselling in 2021, and since then have gone on to study an MSc in Person-Centred and Experiential Psychotherapy, which I'm now in the fourth and final year of. I'm a member of both BACP and UKCP and working ethically is deeply important to me. I'm driven by the values of justice, respect, and autonomy, and hold a deep belief in the power of dialogue and relationships.

Authenticity is essential, as you can only open up in therapy with someone genuine and trustworthy. So I bring my full self to my sessions. I love using metaphors to help in understanding exactly what your experience is like. I welcome swearing and I’m often a bit sweary myself. And I love to laugh with my clients. In fact, every type of emotion is welcome in my counselling room, from the depths of despair, to anger, anxiety, and joy.

I describe my way of working as trauma-informed, meaning I understand the effect that all types of traumatic experience can have on us. I always intend to work in an anti-oppressive way, meaning I recognise all the ways in which power and powerlessness impact on our lives, in unique ways. I work in an anti-racist, neurodiversity-affirming, and body-positive way.

HOW CAN COUNSELLING HELP?

Life can be hard. Everyone encounters difficult situations and painful experiences, and I believe that talking helps. As a person-centred counsellor, I provide a non-judgemental and safe setting for you to explore what matters. I believe in everyone's ability to grow and heal with the right support. I want to help you feel heard, understood, and empowered to make changes or to see a new path forward. Together, we can work on ideas and options for moving forward. I offer authentic warmth, empathy, and understanding.

I work with individual adults from the age of 18 and up. I have worked with a wide variety of clients, seeking counselling for a wide range of reasons. Whatever you want to talk about, I’m willing to meet you where you are and explore it together.

SUPPORTING NEURODIVERGENT INDIVIDUALS

I'm autistic and I love working with neurodivergent clients including those who are autistic, ADHD, AuDHD, or neurodivergent in another way. I have a good awareness of masking and the difficulties neurodivergent people face within a largely neuronormative world, and I work hard to make my sessions a safe and welcoming space for clients to unmask and become their authentic selves.

SUPPORT FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY ABUSE AND NEGLECT

I also have a good awareness of abuse and neglect of all kinds, be it sexual abuse, emotional or psychological abuse and coercive control, or physical abuse. I have supported clients who have been abused or neglected by family members, partners, and others, both in childhood or adulthood. I understand the long-lasting effects that these often traumatic experiences can have on a person. Making people feel safe, heard, believed and validated is an important part of what I aim to offer.

CONTACT ME

I invite you to contact me with any questions you might have about me or about how counselling works, or to arrange an initial assessment appointment. I offer all potential clients a free 30 minute Zoom session where we can explore your reasons for seeking counselling, and how you hope it will help. It gives you a chance to decide whether I am the right therapist for you.

All enquires are usually answered within 24 hours, and all contact is strictly confidential and uses secure phone and email services.

MY LOCATION

I work face-to-face from my counselling room in Bletchley, Milton Keynes. It's a comfy and relaxing space, with no distractions. A chance to have a hot drink and for you to talk about whatever is important. The room is wheelchair accessible, and there is access to a toilet. Most of my clients like coming to have their sessions in person, but I do also work online, using Zoom. If you think I might be a good match for you, please get in touch.

FEES & AVAILABILITY

Sessions last 50 minutes and most clients come weekly, at the same time and day each week. But if you would prefer a different session length or frequency, please let me know. I currently have limited availability, on weekday daytimes. My session fees are £50. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, so as long as you let me know more than 24 hours before the session if you can't attend then you won't be charged.

TAKING THE FIRST STEP

Whether you’ve had counselling or psychotherapy before, or you’re considering trying it out for the very first time, it can be a difficult thing to reach out for support. I know that people have usually tried lots of different things to help themselves before coming to a psychotherapist, but sometimes you need extra support to fully address your problems. I’ve been there, and you’re not alone. I’m here to answer any questions you might have and I promise to respond to all enquiries within a week, although I’m usually much quicker than that. I look forward to hearing from you.
